What are the benefits of light therapy? My take after several months

When I started light therapy, I wasn't looking for a revolution.

I simply wanted to compensate for the lack of light in my dark apartment… and get a bit more energy in the mornings.

Looking back, the effects turned out to be far broader than I expected. Here are the main benefits I personally observed after several months of regular use.

Waking up became so much easier

This was the first effect I noticed.

Before:

  • Struggling to wake up
  • That lingering feeling of night
  • Just wanting to stay in bed

After a few days of morning light therapy:

  • Waking up felt more natural
  • A sense of daylight came faster
  • Less brain fog

Light sends a clear signal to the brain: the day has started.

More energy in the morning

I'm not talking about an artificial boost like coffee.

It's more subtle:

  • Less heaviness
  • Clearer thinking
  • A smoother start to the day

Especially in winter, when mornings are dark.

Better seasonal mood

I've never suffered from severe seasonal depression… but a real dip in mood every winter? Definitely.

Every year:

  • Less motivation
  • Wanting to stay home
  • Psychological fatigue

Light therapy took the edge off that feeling.

Not completely gone — but clearly reduced.

Better sleep regulation

An indirect effect, but a real one.

  • More consistent bedtime
  • More regular rhythm
  • Less disruption between waking and sleeping

Exposing your body to strong light in the morning helps resynchronise your internal clock.

Less daytime fatigue

Before:

  • Mid-morning energy crash around 11am
  • Afternoon slump

After:

  • More stable energy
  • Fewer fluctuations

Especially on grey, sunless days.

Better concentration

This was an effect I didn't necessarily expect.

But working in the morning after a session:

  • Clearer mind
  • Less scattered
  • Better productivity

Light also affects cognitive alertness.

A general sense of wellbeing

Hard to quantify… but very real.

  • Less of a "tired" look

An indirect effect, probably linked to sleep and energy levels.

How long before you notice the effects?

Effect Observed timeframe
Morning energy A few days
Sleep 1 to 2 weeks
Seasonal mood 2 to 3 weeks

Consistency makes all the difference.

The limits of light therapy

Let's be honest:

  • It's not a miracle cure
  • Effects are gradual
  • Results depend on consistency

Without daily use, the benefits fade.
